"The Apprentice" - The Power of E-Mail Displayed On Network Television.

 

Viewers of the November 11th NBC episode of “The Apprentice” witness the power of e-mail marketing.

 

On the November 11th episode of “The Apprentice”, nine remaining candidates competed on two teams to market and sell bridal gowns.  The winning team would be selected based on total profit generated.

 

While team Apex handed out fliers to commuters at New York’s Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station, team Mosaic paid $1,000 to send an e-mail blast to 27,000 brides-to-be in the New York area.  Team Mosaic used a list from theknot.com.  The women on the e-mail list had agreed to receive news and products from third parties (this is called an opt-in list).

 

The results:

Team Apex, the group who handed out fliers, sold two wedding gowns and had $1,060 in profits.  Team Mosaic, the group that used a targeted e-mail list sold 27 wedding gowns in four hours.   Team Mosaic’s profit was $12,788.

 

Kelly Perdew, the leader of Team Mosaic, would go on to win “The Apprentice” the following month.  Incidentally, even though winning team-member Maria Boren forgot to include the bridal boutique’s phone number on the e-mail broadcast, the Mosaic team still won the contest by a landslide!

Conclusion:

False E-Mail Circulates Over Internet Regarding Telemarketers Gaining Access to Cell Phone Numbers.

 

There's been confusion and misinformation over the last couple of weeks as an e-mail works its way around the Internet warning people about a directory of cell-phone numbers that will be released to telemarketers on Jan. 1, 2005.

 

Please be aware that this e-mail is absolutely false.

 

What is correct is that a Portland, Ore., company called Qsent will start compiling cell-phone numbers for a 411 directory system on Jan. 1, 2005.

 

Rest assured that telemarketers will not have access to the database of cell-phone numbers. There is no deadline to register your number on the federal government's do-not-call list. Cell phone numbers will not be included in the directory unless you request it.

 

Your name and number will not be added to the database unless you want it to be - and even then, it won't be listed in a book anywhere and certainly won't be handed over to telemarketers, said Greg Keene, chief privacy officer for Qsent.

 

"It's an opt-in model," Keene said, referring to the practice where consumers ask to participate instead of being forced.

 

The cell-phone directory, called the Wireless 411 database, is backed by all the major cell-phone carriers except Verizon Wireless. It intends to incorporate cell-phone numbers into the standard 411 service to accommodate a growing number of people who have dumped land line phones for cell phones.
