The new technology, currently being called a four-state barcode, will enable business mailers to track millions of pieces of mail and to easily request special services such as address correction and confirmation of delivery.† The new technology will also enable the Postal Service to process and deliver mail more faster and more efficiently.
"Right now, a piece of mail can have several barcodes on the envelope," said Charlie Bravo, the Postal Service's senior vice president of intelligent mail and address quality.† "But because the four-state barcode can hold up to three times more information than other kinds of postal barcodes, only one barcode will be needed on a mail piece," added Bravo.† "This will make it easier for our customers to do business with us as well as make the mail a more valuable business tool by freeing up space on the envelope for marketing messages."

Direct sales increased nearly 80% from 1994 to 2004, from 16.6 billion to 29.7 billion, according to the Direct Selling Association.† The association is a trade organization made up of companies that manufacture and distribute goods and services sold directly to consumers.
Currently, the largest categories of product sales are personal care products ($9.2 billion), home/family care ($9.1 billion), and wellness products ($4.8 billion).
It's easy to see why direct sales has increased.† "It's become an increasingly more popular way to shop," said Amy Robinson, director of communications and media relations, for the Direct Selling Association.† She added that "On the financial side, direct selling has low overhead, robust cash flow and there's little need for an advertising budget because that's what your sellers are doing for you".†
At the same time, consumers are having increased frustration with traditional retail shopping.† "If you go to a store, but aren't exactly sure what you want or how to choose, it is becoming more and more likely that you'll have some level of difficulty finding a knowledgeable salesperson to assist you," Robinson said. "Even if you can find a clerk, the likelihood that they will have in-depth knowledge about the product ... is extremely low."
Many traditional retailers have started their own direct selling subsidiaries, including Lillian Vernon with "Celebrations," Jockey with "Jockey Person-to-Person," Jones Apparel Group with "Million Wishes," and the Body Shop with "The Body Shop at Home."
