'Tis The Season: Talon Mails Numerous Holiday Catalogs.

According to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), Americans plan to spend over $300 billion on holiday gifts this year. With the holiday shopping season soon underway, Americans will flock to catalogs, the Web, and stores to find items on their holiday gift lists. The mailing industry is already reporting a very busy holiday season.

Direct Mail is entering its busiest time of year – the Holiday Season.  Helping to make this year so active are these circumstances:

  • most consumer telemarketing has been stopped by do not call lists.
  • e-mail response rates have cooled off.

Catalog mailings are not the only direct mail segment that sees extensive activity this time of year.  With the Holiday Season on consumer’s minds, not to mention a last chance for an end-of-year tax deduction, non-profit fundraisers are very busy getting their mailings produced too.

Due to an expanded client base Talon has stretched our two production shifts to 20 hours a day to keep up with demand.

A sampling of some of our catalog mailings recently completed in time for the holidays:

New Book on Direct Marketing Shares 40+ Years of Street Smarts.

Lee Marc Stein, Principal of his own direct marketing consulting and creative services firm, has authored a new book, Street Smart Direct Marketing. The book is a distillation of the experience gained over 40 years in corporate direct marketing management positions, as an agency executive, and, for the last 10 years, as a consultant.

Lee, a long-time friend of ours at Talon, says ‘The Street Smart’ in the title refers to the fact that, like many colleagues of my generation, I have absolutely no formal training in direct marketing, or marketing in general for that matter. You don’t survive in the street on theory, and you don’t thrive in direct marketing on theory, either.

The largest section of the book is devoted to direct response copywriting and contains guidance on involvement, humor, long vs. short copy, sins and mistakes, and using anger, among other topics. Other sections of the book cover direct marketing management, branding, financial aspects, improving lifetime value, lists and media, offers, lead generation, timing, and overcoming disbelief.

The book features a Foreword by industry stalwart Denny Hatch. Mr. Hatch writes:

“I have known Lee Marc Stein for 30 years… Over the years, Lee has had a slew of clients and marketed a ton of wildly diverse products and services in the consumer and business-to-business arenas. Only after decades in the trenches--of savoring winners and analyzing losers, of choosing lists, creating media plans and punching adding machines -- does a practitioner become a true artist in the field of direct marketing…For the newbie, Street Smart Direct Marketing is a massive checklist of how to make choices --what to do and what not to do. The seasoned pro will be able to go through it and say, "Holy smoke! This is the ultimate refresher -- reams of stuff I used to know and haven't thought about in years!"

Street Smart Direct Marketing is available for sale online at www.streetsmartdm.com. The introductory price for the downloadable version is $29.95, with a print version available at $39.95 including shipping. Lee is making a donation to Reading Is Fundamental to celebrate publication of the book.
